CHAPTER
THIRTY-ONE
âWonder if they can see us right now?â Rick asks.
âProbably,â I say, and turn and wave toward the trees lining the golf course.
We are standing behind Sheriâs house.
âItâs so surreal that they have it,â Rick says, âbut then to boast about it like itâs something to be proud of . . .â
âIt was sickening.â
âSo much concentrated power,â Rick says. âYou know they never have turned over the costume Sheriâs attacker wore. Iâm telling you . . . they do what they want to . . . with impunity. Those who live here have far more to worry about from them than the supposed boogie men outside these walls theyâre meant to be protecting them from.â
âNo doubt,â I say, âandââ
I stop as Blade opens the recently repaired back door. âYou boys gonna hang out in the garden all day or yâall wanna do some investigative work?â
We walk over and join her inside the house.
Sheri, Ashlynn, and Alana are at a yoga class, a spa day, and a playdate respectively, so we have the house to ourselves.
Blade sits down at her open laptop on the dining room table.
We join her.
âHowâre you feeling?â I ask.
âLike the fuckinâ fog is finally liftinâ,â she says, âHowâd it go with Ace Davis?â
âFeel free to ask him yourself,â I say. âHeâs listening in right now.â
âHuh?â
I explain.
She shakes her head. âNot surprised. But heâs wrong. Our presence here shows the riffraff can still get in.â
âSays if Aiden had just stayed inside the confines of this citadel he wouldnâtâve gone missing,â I say.
âHow that jibe with what happened to Sheri inside her own bedroom inside her own house inside his citadel?â
âRiffraff from outside must have snuck in somehow, but not to worry, top cop is on it.â
âAlways an outsider, ainât it?â she says.
âStranger danger,â I say.
âBet he black too,â she says.
âThe danger is always out there, always from the other.â
âStatistically, youâre far, far more likely to be hurt or killed by someone you know,â Rick says. âItâs not even close. And yet . . . what happened to you last night . . . seems like the work of a stranger. We can find no evidence that Sammy did anything. Of course, I havenât found any evidence that anybody else did either.â
âIf Sammyâs been going to Suziâs for years,â I say, âwhy just drug him now?â
âGood point,â Rick says.
âMaybe Sammy wasnât the intended target after all,â I say. âOr maybe heâs been drugged before.â
âThatâs interesting,â Rick says. âBoth of those could be the caseâor maybe Sammy was meant to be drugged so heâd be incapacitated when whoever did it made his move on Blade.â
âI been thinkinâ some of those same things,â Blade says.
âIâm still going over all the surveillance footage to seeââ
âYou mind if I take a look at it?â she asks. âSee if I recognize anyone?â
âNot at all,â he says. âThatâs a great idea. Iâll get the files to you.â
She says, âIâve been watching the feeds from the night Aiden vanished. Look at this.â
She angles the laptop so we can see it too.
